■ポイント■　「under whose protection their land had fallen」の部分が少し訳しにくいと思います。「whose」は「the empire」を先行詞とする関係代名詞です。

「under whose protection their land had fallen」を普通の形の文章にすると、こうなります→「their land had fallen under the empire's protection」（彼らの国はその帝国の保護下におかれた）。

前置詞＋関係代名詞が訳しにくいときは、一度、普通の形の文章にすると理解しやすくなると思います。

［課題文の訳］　妻はベールを、夫はトルコ帽をかぶった家族がいた。彼らは自分たちの国を保護下に収めた帝国の中心地を見学するために、おそらく遠路ボスニアからやって来たのだろう。
