他にすることがないために
that one might not otherwise notice.
そうでなければ気づかないかもしれない

■ポイント■　「for want of」は「〜がないために」という意味です。

例：　The plants died for want of water.　→　その植物は水不足で枯れた。

［課題文の訳］　ハニアは、さえない町だったが、ライダルは活気のない町が嫌いではなかった。なぜならば、そうした町では他に何もすることがないので、そうでなければ気づかないかもしれない物事に気づかせてくれるからだ。
