課題文をスラッシュで短く分解してから、訳してみましょう。
She ate noisily,／greedily,／a little like a wild beast in a menagerie,／and／after she had finished each course／rubbed the plate／with pieces of bread／till it was white and shining,／as if she did not wish／to lose a single drop of gravy.

彼女は音を立てて食べた

一滴の肉汁を残すことを
■ポイント■ 「as if」は「まるで〜のように」という意味です。
例： Mary treats John as if he was her own baby.. → メアリーはジョンを自分の赤ん坊のように扱う。
［課題文の訳］ 彼女は音を立てて、がつがつと食べた。サーカス団の野獣をどこか連想させるような食べ方だった。そして彼女は一皿食べ終えるごとに、皿が白く輝くまで、ちぎったパンでふいた。肉汁を一滴も残したくないと思っているかのようだった。
