■ポイント■　「my short rest to a long and pleasant one」は、この部分だけ見ていても訳せません。普通なら当然あるはずの動詞が省略されているからです。

省略されている言葉を見つけるコツは、文章を前にたどることです。同じ形の語句の並びがあったら、そこに答えがあります。

この課題文の場合は「my modest glass of milk would perhaps expand to a sumptuous five-o'clock tea」に注目してください。「●to▲」という形が「my short rest to a long and pleasant one」と同じです。

「my short rest to a long and pleasant one」に省略されている語句を補うと、「my short rest［would perhaps expand］to a long and pleasant one」になります。
