■ポイント■　この課題文が訳しづらいのは、主語と動詞が離れているからです。いちばん最初に「The patches」という主語が提示された後、なかなか動詞が登場せず、ようやく「are」が出てきます。

この文章の骨格を抜き出せば、「The patches are divided」（狭い畑は区切られている）になるのですが、「The patches」を説明するために、「wildly irregular in form」と「some on such steeply sloping ground as to suggest the idea that they must have been cultivated on all fours」が動詞の前に置かれているので、主語と動詞が離れてしまっているのです。

［課題文の訳］　狭い畑は千差万別な形をしており、農民がはいつくばって耕したに違いないと連想させるほど急な斜面につくられた畑もある。それぞれの畑を区切っているのは、うねや岩のかたまり、地面の深い亀裂、クロイチゴとサンザシ、ハリエニシダのやぶだ。
