前回の課題文と同様、この文章でも語句が省略されています。「the other half lower middle class」に抜けている単語は何でしょうか？

省略語句は前に戻って探すという原則を知っていれば、すぐにわかりますね。「Half of them looked downright poor」がヒントになります。「Half of them looked downright poor」にあって、「the other half lower middle class」にない動詞を探せばいいのです。

繰り返しを避けるために「looked」が省略されているのですね。訳すときは「the other half looked lower middle class」というように「looked」を補いましょう。
